Portfolio of Works
Animals
When I come across and choose to paint our fellow creatures something about their guilelessness sets my world right for a bit. Without them I think we might forget to continue to try to find our best selves. - Click on images for full-size version
Architecture
Though I find the randomness of the natural world magnificent, I often sweep the landscape looking for that vertical to balance the horizontals. That armature to hang my painting on. For me, the geometry of architecture married to the randomness of nature provides both structure and surprise. The combination is irresistible. Salt and pepper. They're just better together. - Click on images for full-size version
Automotive
You can take the girl out of Detroit but you apparently can't take Detroit out of the girl. The daughter of an automotive designer and a child of the Motor City, my lifelong love of all things motorized was inevitable. The sweeping shapes and fins, the flash of chrome and the dreams that rolled down the highways and rural roads in these vehicles makes painting them a true love affair with beauty for me. - Click on images for full-size version
Cuba
Bella Habana! Beautiful Havana. One of the great privileges I've had as an painter was to be able to experience and paint Cuba as part of a group led by Eric Rhoads and Plein Air Magazine. It is a place that can deeply affect a person. I know I did not return the same. I've been drawn back to painting scenes and memories of the beautiful island country and its vibrant and generous people over and over again. I believe that part of your heart truly does remain in Havana. - Click on images for full-size version
Figurative
A lifelong love of books and the stories held between their covers was the magnet that drew me to my early career as an editorial illustrator. We were painters, passionate about our craft. When computers shoved aside our canvases many of us returned to what had always fueled our vision - painting, the love of the human figure and the stories a moment in time can tell. - Click on images for full-size version
Genre
One of my favorite pastimes while traveling is to duck off the highway and find broken remnants of old Route 66 or other forgotten objects of the past. The simple optimism of what felt like a less complicated time makes painting these bit of history pure escape into the land of color, imagination and memories. - Click on images for full-size version
Landscape
The landscape speaks to me of infinite moods, the passage of time and perspective. The perspective that comes while considering that the beauty of what we are painting was formed long before we were here and will continue its passage through time long after we're gone. - Click on images for full-size version
Music Live
One of the missions of Interplay Artists™, the collaborative of Lyn Boyer & Dave Curley, is to explore the commonality of the languages of Painter and Musician. The pieces in Music Live were painted, alla prima, in Durango, Colorado, at the Dave Curley House Concert and the Durango Celtic Festival. The pure response of painting the musicians in the space of less than an hour while they performed, resulted in my answer to the question, "What does music look like?" - Click on images for full-size version
Maritime
Growing up on an island across from the Ameherstburg Channel at the north end of Lake Erie I'd spend lazy summer days watching the big Lakers work their way north and south loaded down with cargoes of limestone, iron ore, grain, coal, or salt. I'd memorize the names on their bows, the flags they flew and could see by their waterline how much of a load they were carrying. The Lakes carry a magic that never leaves you. Returning to paint them was - a remembering.

Portrait Studies
Since mankind's first efforts at visual expression the inexorable fascination with drawing the human face and figure was apparent. To this day we are still drawn to attempting to capture the elusive likeness of the face, as another human being looks back at us. Alla Prima studies from life give the opportunity to paint with energy while still capturing the uniqueness of the sitter. - Click on images for full-size version
Water
What can I possibly say about water. Water in all of its forms is indeed life. An excuse to capture a fleeting moment of its ever changing movement and moods makes it one of the most fascinating subjects to attempt to interpret as a painter. - Click on images for full-size version
